The Spiral and Flame

The symbol for Rational Hedonism is an elliptical spiral (not circular), like the orbit of the planets.

The spiral flows outward, expanding into creation, yet coils back inward, concentrating into a single force. This dual flow reflects the universe's endless cycles of expansion and contraction, mirroring the rhythms of nature and existence.  It represents the connection from the universe to our solar system, to Earth, to humanity--where the elements in our bodies were forged from ancient stars--to you specifically, whose fingerprints mirror the universe's design. This spiral reaches back through our genealogies to human origins, to the atoms forged in stellar explosions, the elements that formed Earth and life itself.

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” - Carl Sagan

The center flame symbolizes the spark of life, nurturing individual potential, radiating outward from inner-personal growth, to family, community and beyond. The flame also represents the illumination of truth chasing away the dark shadow of superstitions that cause anxiety and fear.

The ability to create fire was a key milestone in human mastery of the elements. Throughout history, fires safeguarded our ancestors from predators at night and were used in religious rituals. Home and campfires cook food, provide light, warmth, and hospitality

Today, even with electricity and no working fireplace, Rational Hedonists honor the gift of fire brought to the home by lighting candles, oil lamps, and tabletop fire bowls when gathering with loved ones. Whether at a backyard BBQ, bonfire, campfire, or candlelit dinner, humans still feel the pull towards gathering around a flickering fire.

Representing the ultimate fire that reconnects communities, the Olympic torch is ignited--using the sun to create a pure flame--nearly every four years since 776 BCE, to celebrate our human connection through sport and the spirit of competition and good will.
